I agree wholeheartedly with every single one of your thoughts about Zarek.
I think Laura is a lot more of an inner mess than we sometimes think because she is so good at that cool demeanor. She can be her own worst enemy, closing herself off to what she really needs because she has to make such difficult decisions and she can't always allow emotion to come into the equation. She's very unwilling to share those burdens. I think she has a huge fear of attachment after the loss of her family; loss is terribly difficult for her and, unfortunately, there's a lot of it in the BSG universe.
When I write Laura, I always feel such a sense of release when she opens up. I imagine it must be hard to keep that armor on all the time. It's heavy. And lonely.
